The Institute for Supply Management (ISM) manufacturing purchasing managers index (PMI) came in at 48.7 in August, indicating contraction in U.S. manufacturing for a sixth straight month. The latest reading marks a slightly slower rate of contraction than in July but was lower the forecast of 49.0.
